An excellent example of the only high-head pump manufactured by Ajax.
We have been lucky enough about a dozen times to have one of these since we started back in 2007 - and what a fine example this one is! These pumps are even scarcer than hen's teeth or "those" deposits from rocking horses!
As soon as you look at the wet-end of this pump, you know it is different - but "good different"! That "different" wet-end makes this pump much heavier than its A3 counterpart. Its weight is up around the 230 kg mark.
This pump came from northen NSW and has been fully restored so that it is operational again - and it was all done within a week or so, but no shortcuts were taken. It is certainly ready to go back doing what it does best - pumping water to a head of up to 570 feet.
This pump has been stripped down, sandblasted and undercoated before its final paint job. During its re-assembly, the following new parts were fitted:
- new brass nuts on the piston shaft
- new piston plates
- new centre plate
- new wet-end maintenance kit - buckets, valves, springs, gaskets and packing
- new gland nut
- new 16" 2-V B-section pulley
- new pinion shaft
- new bolts all round
These pumps, even with their high-head capacity, remain economical to install because the suction and discharges are each 1.5" so the cost of piping is still quite moderate.
At 50 strokes per minute, it will produce 730 gallons per hour and, to its maximum head of 570 feet, will need only 5 hp (electric) to drive it.
To cover the extra load that the higher-than-normal head capacity creates, Ajax designed these pumps witht the same power end as the Ajax A4 and Ajax A5 pumps. And, as per the photos, the gear in this pump is in amazing condition.
The photos provided show that this pump, overall, is in really great condition.
These pumps have always sold themselves, so should you have an interest in this pump, it would be advisable to act as soon as is practicable for you.
