This Southern Cross 5" x 5" is waiting to be put to work.

As part of the restoration, after the standard strip down, sandblast and undercoat, it has now been fitted with a new pinion shaft, new piston shaft, new piston plates and centre plate, new pulley (2V aluminium x 18"), new crosshead pin and bush, new wet-end maintenance kit (buckets x 2, valve springs x 4, valve rubbers x 4, gaskets x 6 and gland packing) and new bolts all round. The main gear is in great condition.

A 5" x 5" pump will deliver 2100 gallons per hour at 50 strokes per minute, or 260 rpm at the pulley. It will push that water to a head of 250 feet. With those specificaitons, it will need on 4 hp (electric) to drive it. Driving it faster will require greater horsepower and is not recommended because of the addtional wear and tear on the pump - they were designed to be driven slowly. 

The suction and discharge fittings on these pumps are 2.5" - as a result, they don't need large piping, but at least one size up will help reduce the friction in your plumbing system.
